A Naturopaths approach to Perimenopause, 35 and beyond. 

Anytime from 35 years on we can expect to see shifts in our cycle, this is the road map to menopause, which is not meant to be an end but the beginning of a new stage of life with its own strengths. Menopause leaves us with a new baseline, our energy levels and nutritional requirements shift slightly with the reduced demand to make hormones for a monthly cycle. On the way there we can experience some unwanted symptoms, and some refer to this time as second puberty.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause, the transition phase leading up to menopause, marks a significant shift in a woman’s reproductive cycle. Typically beginning in a woman’s 40s, although it can start as early as the 30s, perimenopause is characterized by a variety of symptoms ranging from irregular menstrual cycles to mood swings, all stemming from fluctuating hormone levels. This phase, often lasting several years, is a natural part of aging, yet it can be surrounded by misconceptions and a lack of clear information.

The physiological changes of Perimenopause push us to change how we live our life and menopause is when the new baseline is reached.

The driver of most symptoms is the decline in progesterone no longer needed to support the implantation of an egg and then oestrogen will remain elevated in relation to progesterone until it also declines. The hormones level out across the board when menopause begins, and this should really be a time of few side effects if you have found your new rhythm and supporting your body’s new needs. 

The time of perimenopause is normally filled with some of the following experiences:

  • Increase midline ‘cortisol’ weight 
  • Interrupted or inability to fall asleep 
  • Break through bleeding, shorter cycles, OR heavy bleeding for extended cycles.
  • Anxiety 
  • Migraines/Headaches
  • Brain fog/slower cognition 

This can lead women to utilise hysterectomy, HRT, calorie restriction and lower self-confidence.
