Rebalancing Your Hormones After the Pill
Rebalancing Your Hormones After the Contraceptive Pill.
When we are on the contraceptive pill, it is important to remember that we are not actually having a period. When we bleed it is a response to the withdrawal of the exogenous hormones in the pill, it isn’t menstruation because we have not ovulated. So, when we come off the pill, the body has had the brake on all our natural hormones and instead has had exogenous hormones which are not biologically identical to our own hormones and override the response of our endogenous hormones.
What Happens When We Come Off The Pill?
Maybe we come off the pill and don’t bleed, or we bleed but don’t ovulate, or we wake up with acne breakouts, and heavy or painful periods. This can all be completely normal as our hormones try their best to re-regulate. The excretion pathways may need some TLC as they have been processing our hormones from the pill, and our hypothalamus may need some support to jump back into the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPO).
HPO is a communication highway between the brain and ovaries. We may be struggling to detox or make hormones, and all of this may need a helping hand to get on the right track. Coming off the pill can trigger or uncover PCOS, Acne, PMS and this can be a completely normal transitionary stage that intervention can support you through. Working with a functional medical practitioner can be integral in managing the process of coming off the contraceptive pill and aiding your body to find its new normal.
